Foreign Direct Investment Plan

March 29, 2016 @ 2:30 pm - 5:20 pm

We know you are extremely busy, but your leadership motivates us to ask for your help & attendance at a meeting the afternoon of March 29th.

As you may have heard, the Wichita Region was selected by Brookings and JPMorgan Chase to build our regional Foreign Direct Investment (FDI) plan as part of the Global Cities Initiative (GCI).  This is the next step after the export plan, and we are excited to begin the process!  You can find out more about the FDI planning project in the attached PowerPoint.

One of the first things we get to do is have our Brookings coaches in Wichita.  During their visit, we want to introduce Brookings to key leadership groups in our region.  The purpose of the brief meetings is to introduce Brookings and GCI, explain the FDI planning process, and most important – receive your feedback.

Who: Those who have interest in foreign capital in our region, e.g. companies, developers, investors, elected official, universities, etc.

What: Brookings FDI Briefings

Why: The best regional FDI plan will come when we listen to the many leadership groups in our region.  Being intentional about foreign capital investment is important to the health and growth of our region.

When: There will be 3 meeting times available on March 29th to meet with the Brookings coaches. Each meeting will host more than one company/organization due to limited time. Please let me know which time slot works best for you/your organization’s representative.

2:30-3:20      BREG/Leadership Council/Entrepreneurship Community/ETF

3:30-4:20      WIBA/REAP/Wichita Manufacturing Association

4:30-5:20      Wichita Chamber

Where:  Greater Wichita Partnership Innovation Center; 505 E. Douglas, Wichita

RSVP: Kansas Global at worthington@kansasglobal.org or page@kansasglobal.org or 316-264-5982.

Brookings FDI Planning Program summary:

  • We are building a regional FDI plan
  • We’re one of only 30 metros in the nation selected to participate in the Brookings GCI program.

Selected through competitive application process

6 cities in our cohort: (Wichita), Charleston, Louisville-Lexington, Chicago, Phoenix, Indianapolis,

Brookings provides coaching, data and guidance

Through peer review, we exchange info and ideas with cities in our cohort

  • Our region is 10 counties: Butler, Cowley, Harper, Harvey, Kingman, Marion, McPherson, Reno, Sedgwick, and Sumner
  • Our regional Export Plan was built in 2014.  The next step is to build our FDI plan.
  • This is a collaborative effort.
  • We begin with a Market Assessment to understand FDI as it is today:  how much foreign investment, who invested, why, what’s important, what we’re doing right, what could be better, and who helped,….

Analyze data

Local market insight: input from FDI companies and other interested parties

Review existing plans: export, BREG, IMCP, state and regional plans, etc.

  • Then we develop strategies to grow FDI
  • We decide together what is important for our region, and what we don’t want
  • The plan will be released before the end of this year
